On a Generalized False Discovery Rate

چکیده
The concept of k-FWER has received much attention lately as an appropriate error rate for multiple testing when one seeks to control at least k false rejections, for some fixed k ≥ 1. A less conservative notion, the k-FDR, has been introduced very recently by Sarkar [Ann. Statist. 34 (2006) 394–415], generalizing the false discovery rate of Benjamini and Hochberg [J. Roy. Statist. Soc. Ser. B 57 (1995) 289– 300]. In this article, we bring newer insight to the k-FDR considering a mixture model involving independent p-values before motivating the developments of some new procedures that control it. We prove the k-FDR control of the proposed methods under a slightly weaker condition than in the mixture model. We provide numerical evidence of the proposed methods’ superior power performance over some kFWER and k-FDR methods. Finally, we apply our methods to a real data set.

The False Discovery Rate in Simultaneous Fisher and Adjusted Permutation Hypothesis Testing on Microarray Data
Background and Objectives: In recent years, new technologies have led to produce a large amount of data and in the field of biology, microarray technology has also dramatically developed. Meanwhile, the Fisher test is used to compare the control group with two or more experimental groups and also to detect the differentially expressed genes. In this study, the false discovery rate was investiga...
متن کاملStepdown Procedures Controlling A Generalized False Discovery Rate
Often in practice when a large number of hypotheses are simultaneously tested, one is willing to allow a few false rejections, say at most k−1, for some fixed k > 1. In such a case, the ability of a procedure controlling an error rate measuring at least one false rejection can potentially be improved in terms of its ability to detect false null hypotheses by generalizing this error rate to one ...
متن کاملFalse discovery rate paradigms for statistical analyses of microarray gene expression data
The microarray gene expression applications have greatly stimulated the statistical research on the massive multiple hypothesis tests problem. There is now a large body of literature in this area and basically five paradigms of massive multiple tests: control of the false discovery rate (FDR), estimation of FDR, significance threshold criteria, control of family-wise error rate (FWER) or genera...
متن کاملA New Proof of FDR Control Based on Forward Filtration
For multiple testing problems, Benjamini and Hochberg (1995) proposed the false discovery rate (FDR) as an alternative to the family-wise error rate (FWER). Since then, researchers have provided many proofs to control the FDR under different assumptions. Storey et al. (2004) showed that the rejection threshold of a BH step-up procedure is a stopping time with respect to the reverse filtration g...
متن کاملOptimal Rates and Tradeoffs in Multiple Testing
Multiple hypothesis testing is a central topic in statistics, but despite abundant work on the false discovery rate (FDR) and the corresponding Type-II error concept known as the false non-discovery rate (FNR), a fine-grained understanding of the fundamental limits of multiple testing has not been developed. Our main contribution is to derive a precise non-asymptotic tradeoff between FNR and FD...
متن کاملStepup Procedures Controlling Generalized Fwer and Generalized Fdr
In many applications of multiple hypothesis testing where more than one false rejection can be tolerated, procedures controlling error rates measuring at least k false rejections, instead of at least one, for some fixed k ≥ 1 can potentially increase the ability of a procedure to detect false null hypotheses. The k-FWER, a generalized version of the usual familywise error rate (FWER), is such a...
